THE HUB

Waterloo, Ontario

Mr. Aqeel was the principal in charge for a 600,000 sq.ft development located on an important urban node in Waterloo at the intersection of Columbia and Albert Streets. The site consists of five 12-story buildings, one 8-story building and two 6-story building and over 1,000 residential units.

The overall vision and design philosophy behind the development centers around creating a pedestrian friendly vibrant community, catering to the demographic. It is a pedestrian friendly urban space with the building rising from an urban park with promenades, public amenity spaces and spaces for display of public art. The taller buildings are placed along the north to block the winds and the shorter buildings are placed along the south to allow the sun to penetrate the pedestrian promenade.

Two activity nodes along the promenade in the form of landscaped open spaces create opportunities for programmable formal and informal spaces for performances, art installations and seasonal activities. Commercial retail and amenities spaces open onto the promenade in order to activate and bring vibrancy to the pedestrian realm.
